7 YouTube Thumbnail Rules That Increase Your Click-Through Rate
However good your video is, nobody will watch it if nobody clicks. The thumbnail is the biggest factor in your click-through rate (CTR). These 7 rules work in every niche.
1. The three-word rule
Keep thumbnail text to 3 or 4 words. The thumbnail should add to what the title says, not repeat it. Title: "I only drank water for 30 days". Thumbnail: "Day 17 😱".
2. Readable on mobile
Most people watch YouTube on their phones, where thumbnails are tiny. Use large, bold fonts, then shrink your design and check that it is still readable.
3. One focal point
One thing should stand out: a face, an object or a number. Too many elements and the eye has nowhere to land.
4. Contrast
YouTube's background is white or black. Bright colors like yellow, red, blue and green stand out. Add an outline or shadow behind text so it is readable on any background.
5. Show emotion
If you use a face, give it a clear emotion: surprise, joy or worry. Faceless channels can do the same with an object or symbol, like a red arrow or a question mark.
6. Be honest
A clickbait thumbnail may win the click, but if the video does not deliver, viewers leave quickly and YouTube stops recommending it. Keep the thumbnail's promise in the first 30 seconds.
7. Test it
Many channels can test up to three thumbnails at once in YouTube Studio with "Test & Compare". If you do not have that option, check CTR after 2 or 3 days, then swap the thumbnail and compare.
