YouTube SEO: How to Write Titles, Descriptions and Tags the Right Way

You worked hard on a video, but the views never came. Often the reason is not the content but SEO: YouTube simply does not understand what your video is about or who to show it to.

Start with keyword research

Type your topic into the YouTube search bar and look at the suggestions that appear. These are things people are actually searching for. Pakistani audiences often mix Urdu and English, such as "mobile repair kaise karein" or "freelancing in Pakistan", so note down both kinds of keywords.

Title

Put the main keyword near the start of the title, and try to keep it under 60 characters so it shows in full on mobile. The title should also give a reason to click: a number, a question or a clear benefit.

Description

The first two lines matter most, because they appear in search results. Put the main keyword and the benefit of the video there. Below that, write 150 to 300 words summarizing the video, add timestamps (chapters), and link to your other videos.

  • Start timestamps with "00:00 Intro" so YouTube creates chapters.
  • Use related keywords naturally instead of repeating one word.
  • Two or three hashtags at the end are enough.

Tags

Tags matter less than they used to, but they help with different spellings of the same word, such as "namaz" and "namaaz". Five to ten relevant tags are enough. Adding other channels' names to your tags does not help.

Thumbnail and the first 30 seconds

SEO gets your video shown in search, but the thumbnail earns the click and retention drives the ranking. Put three or four large words and one clear face or object on the thumbnail, and deliver what the title promises in the first 30 seconds.
